A bit of local history

Lambton Square is located in what was known as the Village of Lambton Mills (originally called Cooper’s Mills). It was renamed in 1838 in honour of John G Lambton, First Earl of Durham (High Commissioner and Governor General of Canada).

Scarlett Rd is named after John Scarlett who came to Canada in the early 1800’s from Newcastle, England. By the late 1810s, he amassed one of the largest land assemblies of that time. On his lands he ran a sawmill, lumberyard, a distillery and a race track. He built his estate, the Runnymede, on Dundas St. from which Runnymede Rd. was eventually named.
